Scrimshaw

Scrimshaw is an art form in which images or engravings are worked into the surface of bone, ivory, tusk or similar material using a needle or scribe the surface scratches are then highlighted with pigments or inks. This process is, in some ways, very similar to tattooing. Scrimshaw can also sometimes take the form of tiny carved sculpture in those same materials. The technique originated on the old whaling ships of the pacific in the mid 18th century just around the time the United States of America was being formed. This art form served as a hobby for many sailors aboard these ships while out at sea, up until the ban on commercial whaling.

Today scrimshaw is a very rare and nearly lost art. While the techniques haven't changed much since the 18th century, the sourcing of suitable materials in a responsible and environmentally sustainable way has changed. This is a very important part of my practice. As an environmentally conscious artist, I do my best to use only responsibly sourced and non-toxic materials in my work.

I take custom orders! I will be happy to work with you to design a piece specifically tailored to speak to the wearer through the language of imagery. I can create your piece for use in jewelry, a custom knife or other object of your design. Contact Me with questions or comments, or to simply put in a request.
